Our primary mission is research and education with a focus on machine perception, cognition, action and control.

The chair is organized into four research areas:

Human Robot Interaction and Service Robotics including work on the integration of speech, language, vision and action; programming service robots; development of new application scenarios for sensor-based service robots; robot systems for education;

Medical Robotics covering all aspects of manipulator and instrument control for complex surgical procedures, e.g. visualisation of all types of patient data, haptic feedback for delicate handling, skill transfer, shared control, multi-manipulator cooperation;

Cognitive Robotics encompassing a comprehensive area of topics ranging from sensor models by the way of individual sensor processing entities (e.g. for high-speed face tracking) to high-level cognitive skills for navigation, adaptation, learning;

Cyber-Physical / Embedded Systems are investigated with special emphasis on fault tolerance and high availability; special topics are the design of very small redundant systems and the associated software development models and tool chains.

Equipment Used

Vicon Vantage

Vantage is Vicon’s flagship range of cameras. The sensors have resolutions of 5, 8 and 16 megapixels, with sample rates up to 2000Hz – this allows you to capture fast movements with very high accuracy. The cameras also have built-in temperature and bump sensors, as well as a clear display, to warn you if cameras have moved physically or due to thermal expansion. High-powered LEDs and sunlight filters mean that the Vantage is also the best choice for outdoor use and large volumes.


The compact Vero cameras have sensor resolutions of either 1.3 or 2.2 megapixels. The camera has a variable zoom lens, which makes it especially suited for smaller capture volumes where it is especially important to have an optimum field of view. The Vero’s attractive price combined with its light weight and small size makes it a great choice for smaller labs and studios.


Tracker has been designed for the requirements and workflow of Engineering users wanting to track the position and orientation of objects with as little effort and as low latency as possible. Perfect for many applications in robotics, UAV tracking, VR and human-machine interaction, Tracker lets you define what you want to track with a couple of mouse clicks – and then you can just leave in the background tracking. A simple SDK lets you connect the output data stream to your own software.


Wir arbeiten im Bereich Sicherheit bei der Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion. Dabei ist es wichtig, dass der Roboter die Bewegung des Menschen wahrnehmen und vorausberechnen kann, und zwar in Echtzeit. Das Vicon Motion Tracking System besteht aus 6 Vicon Vero 1.3 infrarot Cameras und eine PoE Schalter, und hat winzige Latenzen sowie ausgezeichnete Genauigkeit.

Ein wesentlicher Vorteil dieses Systems ist es, dass es so einfach ist zu verstehen und einzurichten. Zusammen mit der umfangreichen Technical Support von Prophysics bedeutet das, dass die Studenten in unserem Labor wenig Zeit und Mühe auf Kalibrierung und Störungsuche verschwenden müssen, und dabei mehr Zeit haben für die eigentliche Forschung.
